The House system in the Harry Potter universe defines communities within Hogwarts that accommodate students who compete throughout the school year, earning points until the end of the school cycle. For Gryffindor, the students are usually strong-willed, brave, courageous, and take on leadership. For Ravenclaw, the students are often intelligent, witty, curious, and academic.

If you’ve always wanted to join a certain House, though, then this is your chance to do so. However, Hogwarts Legacy does let you manage multiple save slots (up to four, in fact), so you could always create a new character for each House. As noted above, though, you shouldn’t expect the game to be significantly different for each of those characters. It’s just there for absolute completionists or second (or third, or fourth) playthroughs. If you’re really curious about what those unique quests consist of, you can find them in this article that contains spoilers for all of them. While your choice of House will not significantly impact your Hogwarts Legacy adventure, there are a couple of pieces of content that are unique to each House that you should know about.
Hogwarts Legacy house differences
If you purchase an interactive wand at Ollivanders, you can flick your wrist at a few designated spots in Hogsmeade (look for the gold markers on the ground) and set off some magical effects. Once the Sorting Ceremony has concluded, you will not be able to change your house. Therefore, players should carefully select which house they want to be in. Furthermore, players can socialise with other 5th year students in your house, and you will get the opportunity to meet students from other houses.

The Must-Play Games Coming in 2024
You have four choices to pick from, and you make this decision when you arrive at Hogwarts and go through the Sorting Ceremony in front of the school. If you've read the Harry Potter books or watched the movies, you probably already have a favourite House. Feel free to select it because the majority of the game stays the same no matter which one you pick. The main story mostly plays out the same, and other content like Side Quests and Assignments are no different.
What are the differences between houses?
Early on in the game, specifically the Welcome to Hogwarts chapter, you will need to choose what House you want to be placed in. This is an important decision that will impact the type of experience you have at Hogwarts. As part of our Hogwarts Legacy guide, we're going to reveal what the Best House is and all differences between Houses. The entire appeal of creating your own student in Hogwarts Legacy is getting to live the life of a young witch or wizard in the titular academy. Just like the source material, the game doesn't dwell too much on the more boring aspects of student life, but becoming a powerful spellcaster will require you to learn from those wiser than yourself.
You must see your playthrough to the end as whichever House you chose. However, on the main menu, there is an additional save slot where you can start a new game. If you wish to, you can play the start of Hogwarts Legacy again and pick a different House. In terms of a single playthrough, though, you're not able to change Houses once you choose one. If you want to follow in the footsteps of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, then select Gryffindor.
Do the Questions the Sorting Hat Asks You Matter?
As you would expect from a witch or wizard still going through school in Hogwarts Legacy, your created character still has a lot to learn in the wizarding world. Thankfully you don't have to go to class in order to expand your arsenal of magical abilities thanks to the Talent system. Talents may as well just be called skills since they function just like skills do in any other RPG. Founded by Godric Gryffindor, the house is emblazoned with a lion and its colors are that of red and gold, and are featured in the different garments a Gryffindor student might wear. Students also gain exclusive access to the Gryffindor Common Room (seen in the video above), which is located in the South Wing's Gryffindor Tower -- and guarded by a portrait of a fat lady.
Can You Change Houses?
In “Hogwarts Legacy,” the Sorting Hat will suggest a house for you; however, you are not bound to that decision, as in the movies. You do have the freedom to choose a different house if that is how you wish to play out your adventure. Upon entering Ravenclaw, you will be received by an impressive golden eagle that stands guard at the door. The eagle will close its wings before opening the door for its students. The majesty and beauty of the Ravenclaw House common areas are unparalleled in Hogwarts Legacy.
Joining Gryffindor House in Hogwarts Legacy offers the quest of “The Hunt for the Missing Pages,” wherein you can meet some unique characters. Gryffindor tends to have the most daring, brave, and chivalrous individuals. Some of the most iconic characters of the Harry Potter franchise belong to this house, including Harry Potter himself. The houses in Hogwarts Legacy are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin; each representing different types of students. We’ll briefly describe the characteristics of those in each Hogwarts house. One of the most interesting aspects of this magical universe is its house system, which are tight-knit communities for distinct types of students at Hogwarts.
While it is not entirely official, the Sorting Hat likely picks a House for students based on their qualities; however, it is not 100% accurate. Every new student of Hogwarts will have to meet the Sorting Hat at the beginning of the school year during the Sorting Ceremony, which will go student by student, deciding which house is best for each of them. You will only be able to enter the dormitory of the House you're sorted at.
There’s a similar show during the holiday season dubbed the Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts Castle (if the land is too crowded to see it, just show up a half hour later for the next presentation). If you prefer a specific house, you will be able to select that house during the Sorting Ceremony. If you do not prefer a specific house, though, you can choose the house that the Sorting Hat recommends to you.
